Reflections on Gratitude

What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving? One of the biggest things I’m grateful for is you, my clients and colleagues, and that you have allowed me and my team to be a part of your life.

Being entrusted to build a family’s dream home is a big responsibility – and it’s something that I don’t take lightly. Looking back over the past 20 years, I am so grateful that my team and I have had the opportunity to build over 350 custom homes and, even more importantly, build and maintain very special relationships with wonderful people (like you!) along the way.

I feel very fortunate to be supported by a close-knit team that feels like family, and this year our team has grown a lot, with ten new people joining the “Patterson Family” as the company continues to grow. Because of our growth I have had the opportunity to build a very special custom home for my own family, which we like to call “The Farm,” in Santa Barbara County. The construction of this home was a full-time endeavor that took five years – I would spend the week building homes in Orange County and then on Friday after work drive four hours to The Farm, spend the weekend there managing the build (often with my family in tow, sleeping in our Airstream on the driveway for the weekend!), drive home late on Sunday, and then repeat.

Needless to say, being on the client side of custom home construction has brought a new appreciation of the home building process and new respect for what my clients go through (especially as our home took much longer than normal!). Building a custom home can be exhausting and nerve-wracking, but overall it was an exciting journey that I’m very grateful for.

How will you spend your Thanksgiving this year? This Thanksgiving my entire family will be gathering at The Farm to enjoy the holiday now that the home is complete. My wife and I will have fun watching our three daughters – an 11-year-old (going on 21!) and twin 8-year-olds – run around the property, and will enjoy spending time with my mother, my wife’s parents, and my brother-in-law and his family.

This holiday season Patterson Custom Homes will also be partnering with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County because we care about our community and aim to make a lasting impact. Whether that’s building homes to a higher standard or helping those in need, we care about where we live and the people who live here. We recognize that there are more than 290,000 people in Orange County facing food insecurity – including 1 in 6 children – who are at risk of hunger every month. We invite you to join us in our Virtual Food Drive, as every dollar raised will be used to buy nutritious meals for those in need in our community. Additionally, we will be collecting food donations at our office which you are welcome to drop off in person and say hi — we’d love to see you!

I am thankful for each and every one of you – every client who entrusted me to create a beautiful home for their family as well as the colleagues I’ve had the pleasure of working with along the way. I am grateful for an extremely talented team, a happy, healthy family, a special place to gather and make lasting memories, and the opportunity for us to partner together to give back to those in need.

Happy Thanksgiving!
